About Alvin
Alvin New was born in 1963 in Brownfield, on the Texas South Plains near Lubbock. The family moved to Pecos in 1977. Alvin attended Pecos High School, where he was a standout football and basketball player and went to the state speech tournament. He graduated in 1981.
Alvin attended Angelo State University on a Carr scholarship and graduated with a BBA in management in 1984. He met his wife, Patricia, while both attended ASU; they married in 1984.
Alvin worked as a sales clerk at a Town and Country Food Store on Pulliam Street while earning his degree. Inspired by Town and Country's growth plans and employee stock options, Alvin worked his way to store manager, district manager, merchandise manager, director of marketing, and was a vice president when officers of the company purchased the business from Steve Stephens in 1999. Alvin was one of six equal partners in the leveraged buyout.
The six partners made Alvin executive vice president over operations and marketing, and later president and CEO. During this time, Alvin served on the board of the National Association of Convenience Stores. He was vice chairman of the executive committee of the national association, and served on the government relations board and the political action committee. As chair of the political action committee for five years, Alvin worked with elected officials and government bodies on local, state, and national levels.
Alvin and the management team improved Town and Country's size and profits, leading to a surprise offer from Susser Holdings to buy the company at a price shareholders could not refuse. The company sold in 2007, and Alvin helped in the a transition before leaving the company in 2008. Alvin has remained active in the community and as a rancher since that time.
In addition to his business career, Alvin was a Jaycee and served on many civic and charity boards; he has special ties to the Boys and Girls Clubs. Most recently, Alvin served on the Project Janus board seeking opportunities to serve individuals who suffer mental retardation and mental health concerns. Alvin serves on the Wells Fargo Community Bank Board, the ASU Business School Advisory Council, the ASU Foundation board, the Cornerstone Christian School building committee and capital campaign committee, the Concho Valley Center for Economic Development board that helps entrepreneurs start businesses, the Concho Valley Angel Network board, and is a United Way front runner solicitor. He served on the West Texas Rehabilitation Center board and the ASU Academic Master Plan Committee. Alvin also served as a lector and Sunday school teacher at his church.
Alvin, Patricia, and daughters, Victoria and Elizabeth, created a fund at the San Angelo Area Foundation that financially supports the ASU Alumni Association, ASU facilities development, and the ASU honors program. The fund also supports their church, an orphanage in Mexico, the United Way, specific United Way agencies, the San Angelo Symphony, and Cornerstone Christian School.
Alvin will bring broad experience to the office of mayor. From 1989 until 1999, the New family lived in the Lake View area. Today, they live in the southern part of our city. At Town and Country, Alvin worked at, regularly visited, and supervised stores in every part of the city. He also was CEO of a near-billion dollar company operating in 170 locations with more than 1,900 employees. Alvin New is uniquely prepared to focus on the future of San Angelo.
